10 Core Things

Here are ten core things we believe to be true about children and how those beliefs inform the adventures we create at Adventure Clubs.

Active

Children are naturally wired to be ACTIVE in a way that uses their whole body in space, making hands-on, active experiences the best fit for them when they are young. Our role as parents is to encourage children’s active nature, not stifle it.
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures

Our team designs adventures to be as active and hands-on as possible, as well as participatory for both parents and children. And we adventure “on location” all around our city. We also make sure every adventure has an educational component which helps to develop the core development competencies of every child.

Brave

Children are born BRAVE. Studies show that the only fears babies are actually born with are the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. Giving young children exposure to a wide variety of experiences, including many different textures, interesting sounds and stimulating activities is healthy for every aspect of their development.

How this shapes adventures

Our team focuses on crafting adventures that are challenging, (but FUN!), for children, while also being age-appropriate. It can sometimes be stretching for parents to let their children try something outside of their normal comfort zone. But adventuring parents are grateful to be in a social setting where all the parents and kids are being brave together.

Creative

Children are born with the ability to CREATE something out of nothing. They crave the opportunity to use their minds to make new things, and when we open opportunities for them to create freely, (rather than strictly defining their limitations), we are encouraging children to discover their own creative genius.
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures

At Adventure Clubs, we focus on both the process AND the product of creative adventures. The process of creating art together is just as important as the finished product. We encourage parents to create WITH their children rather than just watching them create or doing it for them.

Curious

Children have a naturally curious nature. They more curious they are, the more they learn. When we offer our children experiences that nurture this curiosity, we give children the gift of lifelong learning.Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder
How this shapes adventures
We encourage children to follow their curiosity on adventures as much as possible. There are so many environments in their lives that restrict their curiosity, which, over time, serves to decrease it because they start to feel like it’s negative to be curious. We want children to learn while they explore their questions and instincts.

Empathetic

Children are born with EMPATHY but it is up to us to nurture it from the earliest days we can, and that means creating intentional opportunities to explore and practice empathy as families.
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures

We create adventures that are designed as group experiences where parents and kids get to explore what empathy means for those around them, whether for animals in danger, homeless in need, etc. These adventures are often life-shaping / perspective-changing – both for parents and kids.

Intuitive

Children are born INTUITIVE. Despite what we may think, kids have a natural instinct about the world around them. From safety, to compassion, to forgiveness, to seeing what is needed – when they are presented with a chance to problem-solve or creatively find a way, they often do!
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures
We work with hosts to create experiences that encourages children to explore problem-solving when they see something that needs to be done. Parents often want to jump in and give the answers, but while adventuring together, they explore seeing the world through their children’s eyes. And naturally, what is discovered for themselves will often be what is remembered.

Social

Children are born social and their need for human connection is core to healthy development. That includes experiencing life together with people across the generations, across ethnicities, socio-economic groups and those with physical challenges.
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures

We create adventures which help families to engage across the lines that usually divide communities. if children are exposed to this kind of diversity of people and experiences early on, and they learn how to explore life in social settings, it can only serve them well in life. Plus, we think everything is more fun in a small group, rather than alone, and all our adventures are designed for 4 – 30 families to experience together.

Tactile

Children are born tactile and have a great need for sensory stimulation and touch and that they learn best when engaging all their senses.
Janelle Schroy, Adventure Clubs Founder

How this shapes adventures

We design experiences where children are encouraged to use as many of their senses as possible and for parents to do the same. Kids need to experience things first-hand rather than just being told about it, and that’s why we adventure all over the city, rather than only in one location.
